Class Projects

In my efforts to recapture and replenish my creativity I am taking a variety of classes in local scrapbooking stores near me.

Recently I had the opportunity to participate in some classes at 2 LSS (local scrapbooking stores).

In the first class I made some All Occasion cards at Making Memories with Scrapbooking on Hastings St in Burnaby BC.

The first card is a generic Baby card using one of the small Cuttlebug embossing folders on a tag and then coloured with chalks.

This next one is a springy Thank You card using Easter paper. The word Easter on the paper is covered up with some strategically placed punch outs.

This next card uses a Cricut greeting that has been trimmed to fit on the card front. The card front has also been trimmed into a wave pattern (freehand) and layered with patterned paper and coloured cardstock. Don't you love the random use of buttons on this card?

This next card was meant to be a wedding card but I ommitted the greeting. The embossed paper on the front is a thin mettallic paper that has been embossed using a Cricut embossing folder. I wasn't sure about this one at first but I like the combo of white, cream, blue and black.

This navy card is a gate fold with the patterned paper panel added to one side afterwards. I especially love the congratulations greeting (a rub-on) added right onto the satin ribbon. I never thought of doing that before!

Another rub-on greeting on a sparkly card. The patterned paper panel has micro glitter added to it using the burnished velvet technique.

Here's a close up of the glitter panel - see how glittery it is!

The next class I attended was a Girlfriends Fip & Fold book at Scrap Arts in North Vancouver. Kelly, a new Australian instructor at the store, showed us how to make this fun and surprisingly easy 5 x9 inch chipboard covered booklet.

Just look at all the space for photos and journally here!

Thanks for popping in on me today!

Paper Bag Purse Album

I made this Paper Bag Purse Album the other day as a store sample for Scrap Arts.

I'll let my daughter loose on it - later - to add more embellishments and some fun photos to finish it off!
Because it's meant to be a purse - the orientation of this album has the sewn binding at the top and the pages flip up vertically.

Belated Birthday Gift

ETA: Someone asked me how I made this Flip Album. I got the original idea and directions from Diane Pappas' blog. Click HERE for her Flip Album Tutorial.

I made this Flip Album for my niece's 10th Birthday - it was last week!

I know I'm so late but we did chip in on something else for her so only this part of her gift is late.

This is the bare album - I'm hoping that she will have enough photos to fill it up - and I'm also sending a gift card to Michaels so she can buy some more "stuff" to put in it.

I have to tell you that I put this together with only a glue stick and now that it is completely dried it's as hard as a rock. Seriously this is only cardstock and patterned paper but it feels like a board book it's so hard!

Here's a close up of the colours and patterns I used.

Here are some inside shots.

I hope she likes it. If you're reading this Riley it's going by Expresspost today so you should have it by Friday!!

More Flip Album Combos

I was asked to put together some more Flip Album Kits for the store.

Here are the combos:

More Flip Album Combos

Here are some photos of Flip Album "parts". The parts shown are the cover and one of the inside pages.

Not sure about the green on this one - I may change it to a Teal!

ETA: I did end up changing this one to a light Teal colour. I like it much better than the green!

These kits will be made into Flip Albums at Thursday's class and I will take photos of the finished album covers then. We're also considering selling them as Flip Album Kits to customers who have already taken the class and learned how to put them together.

In the meantime - what do you think of these combos?

Flip Album Class Update

On Sunday afternoon I taught my first Flip Album class at the scrapbooking store where I work part time. It was FUN but chaotic! The class was slated for 2 hours and there were 8 ladies ready with glue sticks in hand. I'm only sorry I didn't take photos of all the albums created that day...

To refresh your memory (or for those of you who just started reading my blog) here is the link to my sample for this class. Here it is again AFTER I loaded it with my photos and added some journalling.

The results are really beautiful (more so after you add your photos) but getting there - boy oh boy - there are just toooooo many pieces to keep track of! Thank goodness I wrote the page numbers on the back of each piece in pencil for the customers!

Some ladies chose their own paper prior to the class - 2 patterned and 3 solids - and I chose the papers for those that didn't choose their own paper or didn't choose enough paper. I cut up allllll the MILLIONS of pieces (a bit of an exaggeration) before the class to save time. We only had 2 hours and believe me WE NEEDED THE WHOLE 2 HOURS!

The ladies LOVED the papers I chose for them!
The above photos are from a colour combo I put together for a customer who only chose 2 colours of green solid paper and a blue-green bubble patterned paper. I added the French Vanilla and the Basic Grey blue/green paper with graph paper pattern (sorry I don't know the name of it). Well she didn't like the paper I chose for her so I put the album together as a store sample and she chose other paper.
Everyone agreed it was beautiful and I have to admit it turned out better than I expected too! I think the lady was a bit disappointed that she didn't trust my paper choices for her...

I'm doing this class again on Thursday morning (with paper I've chosen) and I will be taking photos of the completed albums. I'll be posting them here if you'd like to check back on Friday night I should have them posted then!
TIPS FOR THIS FLIP ALBUM PROJECT:
1. This project uses a LOT of paper. Map out your paper before you cut so you can conserve paper and reduce the cost of the project.
2. If you are teaching this class LABEL all the pieces by page number. Sorting out the pieces during the class takes a bit of time but saves time and mistakes in the end.
3. If you are making more than one of these albums, cut the paper at one time for all the albums. It took me almost 1/2 hour to cut the paper for 1 album before I figured this one out and then started doing 2 books at once. That speeded up my prep time!
4. Do NOT use the scoring blade on your trimmer to score the folds for the cover. It does cut through the paper and after many folds it will tear. I recommend using the Score-Pal or a stylus/bone folder in your trimmer channel.
5. Do NOT use bulky embellishments inside when finishing off this album. It makes it hard to close, causes bending and leaves unsightly dents in your photos!
6. Take lots of photos and share with all your blogging friends. There are so many variations of this album and we want to see them ALL!

FLIP OUT Class Sample

Boy oh Boy! This Flip Album sure was a challenge for me!

I found the instructions for the Flip Album on SCS (Splitcoaststampers) with some great photos. However, I'm a bit anal and really NEEDED to have more info before I started mine. I like to have cutting directions - pieces all mapped out on the 12x12 - so I don't waste paper.
I also want to offer this as a class and need to cost this out and decide whether to put together kits or have the customers cut the paper themselves. After doing this I'm steering towards kits!
But before I started cutting I sat down with the insructions and mapped out all the pieces by colour. It took me hours -with a few breaks and interruptions!

I used 3 solid colours of cardstock (Bazzills Sagura, Dark Olive, and Rhubarb) and 2 patterns (Basic Grey Eggnog from the DASHER line and Yuletide/Wintermint from the Fruitcake line).
In total this project used up 7 (yes SEVEN) full sheets of 12x12 paper and there are hardly any scraps! I had to change it up a bit and skip a few things because I couldn't bring myself to cut into additional sheets of patterned paper for the flaps.

I also, didn't add any embellishments to mine (other than some ribbon) because I was worried about the thickness. I'll see how thick it is after I add some photos and see what more I can add to it in the way of brads, tags and other things.

I'm going to look for some photos on my computer to put in the album - the colours lend themselves to a wine trip (unfortunately I have no photos from our last wine trip 15 years ago!), or maybe a family album (I'll have to did up some old black and whites or something similiar).
I'll post the completed album later.
